Nenagh Ormond Search Unit has been renamed as Tipperary Search And Rescue N.O.S.U.
This was done following the guidelines set out by the Charities Regulator, as a Charity Search And Rescue Unit we felt this was an important step given our growth in membership across Tipperary, this along with being active across a greater area was a natural step.
We continue to be available and at present we are engaged as part of the Response to Covid-19.
In 2 weeks time, we will send 2 of our members on a rec 3 medics course.
This is a weekend course provided by
Waterford Marine Search & Rescue.
This has only been made possible with the public's continued support.

Joint Training session with
Mourne River Search and Rescue
On Saturday 14th October Nenagh Ormond Search Unit and Mourne River Search and Rescue held joint training exercises in land and water based search and rescue in Castleconnell County Limerick.
As part of the exercise the units worked on a land based scenario searching for a “missing person”. The person had been missing overnight with below average temperatures, the teams were briefed and assigned search locations, once found medical assistance was rendered by a Nenagh Ormond Search Unit Medic for injuries sustained in a fall and hypothermia, the person was then transported via stretcher basket over rough terrain to a safe location for treatment by the emergency services ending the land based training exercise.
Following the land based scenario, Mourne River Search and Rescue personnel provided in depth and interactive Swift Water Rescue scenarios. These involved full water immersion and boat rescue demonstrations, then allowing the Nenagh Ormond Search Unit members to take part in various modes of single and multiple persons in the water rescue.
The Committee and the members of Nenagh Ormond Search Unit would like to express their gratitude to Mourne River S & R for travelling down and joining us in our training exercise on Saturday but also for the experience in allowing us to take part in and learn from the Swift Water Rescue Scenarios, the level of professionalism and skill displayed by the Volunteers of Mourne River S & R were second to none.

Please allow me to introduce myself.
My name is Tom Harvey and I am the Unit Commander of the Nenagh Ormond Search Unit, based in Nenagh, Co Tipperary.
The Unit was set up three years ago and our primary mission is, on request from the Gardaí, to help locate missing persons.
While we are based in Tipperary, we respond, on request, countrywide and have worked in County Tipperary, County Meath, County Galway and, most recently, in the recovery operation for the crew of Rescue 116 in County Mayo.
Since inception, we have assisted in approximately 75 searches.
The training regime for the unit is quite varied and includes such activities as creating awareness of the effects of dementia, how to deal with despondent people, search planning and statistical data, mock searches day & night, Remote/Rescue first aid, dealing with casualties & recoveries, urban search & missing persons profiling, ground sign/tracking, UAV aerial drone training and liaising with statutory authorities to name but a few.
We have on a number of occasions provided community safety patrols (Emergency Medical Assistance, River Patrols and Early Crisis Intervention) at the behest of the Garda, on nights such as the Leaving cert end and the Results nights.
All personal and search related details are confidential.
We are an entirely voluntary group and receive no Government funding: we rely on a combination of street collections and private donations.
The Unit typically costs €8,000 per year to operate and we are currently fundraising to cover the costs of a trailer to use as a mobile command post & for two mountain bikes to assist in our searches and Community safety nights.
We would be extremely grateful if your Company would be able to contribute in any way to help with our running costs.

Nenagh Ormond Search Unit have over the past 6 months engaged with the Community Rescue Service (CRS), and the Association of Lowland Search And Rescue (ALSAR) with the goal of becoming the first volunteer search and rescue unit to be accredited by CRS/ALSAR under their internationally recognised standards
Previous
Next
On the 29th September 6 of our members joined with 12 other Volunteers from across Northern Ireland to begin the training to achieve this aim.
Our members travelled to Coleraine for a two and a half day intensive programs of theoretical and practical training sessions at the CRS/ALSAR Training facility, this proved to be quite an experience for our members culminating in a 5 mile fitness test through the tree covered hills and valleys of the picturesque County Derry countryside.
Our members completed this section of the accredited training alongside our sister group members from Strabane, Portglenone, Coleraine and Belfast CRS units.
On 11th November next our 6 members will once again travel to Colraine as part of their residential training for certification, this will involve exams as well as practical tests, all this as volunteers, we would like to thank those of you who have donated to our unit for your generosity, we have not spent any of our precious financial resources on this as CRA/ALSAR have covered the costs for us, indeed we have been very well treated, from electronic training aids to some very fine cooking.
We will ensure that while 6 of us may be away training the unit is still ready to respond when needed, over the coming months we will of course keep people appraised of how the training and and accreditation is going.

Upperchurch walk in aid of Nenagh search unit
By Simon O'Duffy
A walk is taking place in Upperchurch this Sunday in aid of the recently formed Nenagh Ormond Search Unit.
The voluntary unit has been set up to aid the gardaí in the search and rescue of missing persons in the North Tipperary region. Its dedicated members are on call 24hrs a day, 365 days of the year, and aim to be at any search site in North Tipperary within an hour of being called.
Established last May, the unit presently has 15 members and expects to have more volunteers coming on stream in the new year. The committee would like to have a 40-member strong unit to provide optimum assistance to the gardaí in conducting searches.
The unit holds regular training exercises, covering everything from map reading and navigational skills to specific urban, land and water searches, as well as first aid, voice techniques and other search-related procedures. All members are garda vetted.
The unit is chaired by Marcella Keogh of Ballygibbon, Kilruane with Birdhill man Tom Harvey as vice chairman; both have extensive search and rescue experience.
Mr Harvey pointed out that Nenagh Ormond Search Unit is a non profit and non government organisation that depends on support from the local community. He thanked a number of local businesses have already come forward with funding for the group to purchase the specialised equipment that its members require.
Mr Harvey hoped for a good turnout at this Sunday's fundraising walk in Upperchurch, which is being held for both the new search unit and the local branch of the Irish Red Cross.
Starting at 12.30pm, the 6km loop walk will set out from Upperchurch village. There will also be a 1km route for pushchair/wheelchair users.
Sunday's event will be followed by refreshments, a raffle and firewood auction. Adult registration €10 and under 16s go free. Visit upperchurch.ie or contact 087-3945648 for further information.
